In one of last year’s Newsflash articles, Walter van Harberden, Project Manager at Padmos Shipyard, discussed the yard’s cooperative relationship with C-Job. This originated from Padmos’ desire to take on a greater number of new build contracts to boost its well-established business of ship repair and maintenance services. C-Job’s role was to provide additional engineering and naval architectural services.
Last year, Walter mentioned that there were a couple of projects in the pipeline. One of these came to fruition early this year when Padmos was contracted by Rederij T. de Boer to build a new fishing vessel. Now it’s time to catch up with Walter to find out more about the project.
Can you tell us more about this contract?
This one is for the UK 124 – Luut Senior, a 24.95-metre by 8.5-metre fly shooting fishing vessel. We laid the keel in March and have the delivery scheduled for January 2020.
What does the client want to accomplish with this vessel?
One of the primary aims is to increase the overall efficiency by optimising the propulsion arrangement, which is direct-diesel driven. We will achieve this by increasing the size of the propeller. The client uses a 2.3-metre diameter propeller on his current vessel, but this new vessel will have a 3-metre propeller. Therefore, with the same power capacity, they will have much more bollard pull – a characteristic that is critical in fishing operations.
How was C-Job involved?
Their Rotterdam office supported our sales process by providing a 3D digital model and 3D .
And how will their input continue during the construction phase?
We have produced our own general arrangement plans of the vessel, and they are providing us with the production drawings that need the more specialist technical and engineering knowledge. These detailed drawings include all the fishing equipment and propulsion arrangement so it’s quite a complex task because this is a relatively small boat in relation to the amount of equipment it contains.
Is this an efficient process?
Yes, it is very streamlined. We have one person from C-Job working here throughout the project, which helps translate any differences between our work floor and their drawings. It’s a proven method that we have used before on a vessel similar to this.
Do you have any other new build contracts on the go?
The UK 124 is actually the first of three similar vessels that we are building for three different owners. On top of that, we have also just signed a letter of intent for a fourth vessel. All these vessels will have input from C-Job.
How do you plan the logistics of building three vessels at once?
We will be building them simultaneously and delivering them at four-month intervals. In terms of workflow, this is the optimum number of vessels that we can construct at any one time because we have to keep in mind that we still have repair jobs coming in all the time.
